A: A garage door opener is a device that attaches to the top of your garage door. It uses either a wall switch or a remote to control the door opener. Most openers have a string that you pull and which triggers the door to open and close.
A: There are three major components to a garage door opener:
(1) the motor,
(2) the chain, and
(3) the trolley.
The motor powers a chain that moves through a track at the top of your garage door. The trolley is attached to the far end of this chain and rides along with it as the garage door opens and closes. When you operate your garage door opener by pushing a button, the motor is activated and moves the chain. The trolley pulls the door along with it.
If your garage door has a screw drive, once you pull the cord triggering the opener to open or close, an electric eye that senses infrared light detects when your car approaches or leaves, thus preventing the possibility of entrapment. A good idea is to check your garage door after it opens or closes. If it doesn’t close all the way, go outside and clean the infrared sensor with an electronics wipe before you enter.
A: The most common symptom of a problem with your garage door opener is that you can’t open or close the door from inside the house. If this happens, there could be one of several things wrong:
(1) The bulb that makes the infrared eye work might have burned out.
(2) A wire might have come loose from the switch in your garage. Try tightening it and trying again.
(3) If you’re using a remote control to open your door, the battery may be dead or missing. Replace with fresh batteries and try again.
(4) The safety eye may not be working properly, preventing the garage door from closing completely. Try cleaning the eye with an electronics wipe; if this doesn’t work, you’ll need to replace it.
(5) The chain or belt that opens and closes the garage door may be broken. This is a more complicated fix than others, so call for service.
